Russians operatives ‘stole identities’ in the US, prosecutor says


Russian operatives stole identities, posed as Black Lives Matter activists and pushed allegations of voter fraud, the US team prosecuting 13 Russians for alleged interference in the US presidential election has said. Special counsel Robert Mueller announced on Friday that 13 Russians and three Russian institutions had been indicted by a federal grand jury in Washington DC. These entities include the Internet Research Agency, which has been described by critics as a “troll farm”. Monthly budget The indictment says the Russians’ activities “included supporting the presidential campaign of then-candidate Donald J Trump … and disparaging Hillary Clinton”. The group allegedly had a monthly operational budget as large as $1.25m (£890,000). The charge sheet says the Internet Research Agency “had a strategic goal to sow discord in the US political system, including the 2016 US presidential election”. Clinton cage Members of the group posed as Americans, and opened bank accounts under their identities, and spent thousands of dollars buying political advertising, the indictment says.
