VP Mike Pence Honors Women's History Month with Speech at Independent Women's Forum

00:10
•
Vice President Mike Pence addressed the Independent Women's Forum Tuesday night to celebrate Women's History Month and the many contributions women have made to the United States.

This may be a month when we remember women's history in America but the truth is women in America are making history every single day," Pence said.

"Women are graduating from college and getting advanced degrees in record numbers today. They're driving our economy through entrepreneurship and innovation as never before," he added. "They've built business, they've built communities, they've helped build families into this extraordinary fabric that we call American life."

Game on: it’s never too early to teach children about money

22:28
•
The cost of a mortgage or rents, meeting monthly utility bills, shelling out for a new car – all headaches most people get to worry about from their 20s. But while some may struggle to pay their bills after a few too many nights out at the start of the month, others will have a tightly followed plan for their repayments.

So what is the difference between the savvy saver and the more knee-jerk spender?

Experts believe it is all about the age you learn how to spend responsibly. Adult money habits are typically set by the age of seven, according to a large-scale study by the government’s Money Advice Service and behaviour experts at Cambridge University.

By then, most children have grasped how to recognise the value of money and are capable of complex functions such as planning ahead, delaying a decision until later and understanding that some choices are irreversible, the report says.

Craig Mack: rapper behind Flava in Ya Ear dies aged 46

22:24
•
Craig Mack, the New York rapper who scored a 1994 hit with Flava in Ya Ear, has died of heart failure, aged 46.

Mack grew up in Brentwood, Long Island, and recorded his earliest work as MC EZ. Via an introduction from rap group EPMD, he became one of the many proteges of Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs, who released Mack’s album Project: Funk da World in 1994. It contained the single Flava in Ya Ear, the remix of which reached the US Top 10 thanks in part to an all-star cast of guest rappers: the Notorious BIG, Busta Rhymes, LL Cool J and Rampage.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald – first full trailer released

22:24
•
The first full-length trailer for the sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has been released. Subtitled The Crimes of Grindelwald, it sees Eddie Redmayne return in the role of “magizoologist” Newt Scamander in the second of the projected five films in the JK Rowling-scripted Harry Potter spinoff series.

Directed by Potter veteran David Yates, Fantastic Beasts 2 sees Scamander and Albus Dumbledore (played by Jude Law) take on powerful dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp). Katherine Waterston also returns from Fantastic Beasts, as Tina Goldstein, the rehabilitated auror who also joins the fight against Grindelwald.

While Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them proved a substantial hit, grossing more than $800m after its release in November 2016, the sequel has had a rocky time. Rowling was forced to defend the casting of Depp, saying she was “genuinely happy” to have Depp in the film after controversy over the circumstances of his divorce from Amber Heard. More recently, Rowling was accused of responsibility-shirking after Yates revealed that Dumbledore’s supposed gay sexuality was not being referred to in Fantastic Beasts 2, despite the fact that the whole film is about the wizard he was supposedly in love with as a young man.

Rachel Roddy’s classic Neapolitan puttanesca sauce recipe

22:23
•
There are various stories about the origins of spaghetti alla puttanesca; various translations, too: whore’s spaghetti, tart’s spaghetti; I have even heard it called lady-of-the-night spaghetti.

As much as I like Neapolitan tales of seductively coloured clothes, satisfied customers and meals cooked between clients, the story that always comes into my mind is the hungry group rolling up to a trattoria late and demanding the owner “faccia una puttanata qualsiasi”. Now, in this context, puttanata translates as “a rubbish thing”, so you could translate this – clumsily maybe – as “make me whatever rubbish you have”. Now this is Naples and, as we all know, no one ever eats rubbish in Naples – especially in the stories recounted by English food writers in Rome. The puttanesca rumbled up in that kitchen was a thing of sapid beauty, a tangle of spaghetti with a deeply flavoured sauce of tomato, garlic, chilli and the inimitable three: anchovy, capers, olives. Such a thing of beauty that it became a much-requested dish known as puttanesca.

Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Paul Feig adopt 'inclusion riders': 'It's just common sense'

22:21
•
Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Paul Feig have committed to adopting an “inclusion rider” for their companies’ films as the diversity agreement that Frances McDormand promoted in her Oscars speech continues to spread within Hollywood and other industries.

The public pledges from the high-profile actors and directors to embrace inclusion riders – a contract clause stipulating diversity in casts and crews – has increased pressure on other celebrities and studios to follow suit, and comes as businesses outside of entertainment are also exploring the concept.

Mean Girls musical opens on Broadway: 'They connected it to 2018'

22:21
•
Mean Girls, based on the beloved 2004 Tina Fey comedy, arrived on Broadway for its first preview last night, and even before the show ended, fans who hadn’t managed to land a ticket crowded the fuschia stage door of the August Wilson Theatre, standing in the drizzle and hoping for autographs.

The story of Cady (Lindsay Lohan in the movie, Erika Henningsen here), a teenager who transfers to a high school in Illinois after growing up on the African savannah, and falls in with the Plastics, a band of teen queens, the movie became a not-so-cult classic. It’s still big on the slumber party circuit. Theatergoers streaming on to the sidewalk, some of whom hadn’t even been born in 2004, were quoting favorite lines to each other: “So fetch!” “She doesn’t even go here!” “On Wednesdays we wear pink.”

22:20
•
Lera Abova’s big break came in 2016 when she shot with photographer – and 90s grunge legend – David Sims, who became a champion of her career. Abova describes herself as his muse which, she says, “is just amazing”. “He’s an artist. To know that he sees something in me … I’m always really honest with him, crying in front of him, telling him he changed my life, which is very true.” She has also worked with Sølve Sundsbø, Colin Dodgson and Mariano Vivanco.

Abova has shot covers and fashion stories for Vogue Ukraine, Vogue Paris, Vogue Germany, Vogue Russia and Vogue Australia. She has also starred in campaigns for Joseph, Acne and Sportmax.

Rugby union: New Zealand's national women's side receive historic paid contracts

22:18
•
Twenty-three years after men’s rugby union was made professional, New Zealand’s national women’s team – the Black Ferns – will be offered paid contracts for the first time, valued at up to NZ$45,000 inclusive of allowances and other payments.

England had previously funded a professional women’s XV ahead of last year’s Rugby World Cup, however that funding has now been diverted to rugby sevens.

The new memorandum of understanding between New Zealand Rugby and the New Zealand Rugby Players Association sees a minimum of 30 players employed on contracts. They will also have access to medical and life insurance, as well as maternity leave entitlements to encourage women to return to the game.

The 30 contracted players will commit 10-14 hours per week to training, as well as 50 days a year of training camps and playing fixtures. Given the contracts will remain semi-professional and unable to support a living wage, players will also be encouraged to continue with work and study alongside their sporting commitments.

Chelsea aim to be bold amid fury of Barcelona’s Nou Camp storm

22:17
•
Antonio Conte may just have been being painfully realistic but his body language at Camp Nou came across as distinctly downbeat. The Chelsea manager’s message was laced with caution on the eve of their return match with La Liga’s champions elect.

He talked up Barcelona’s Andrés Iniesta as a “genius with a football”, reminding all that it would take “a perfect game” to knock out “one of the best teams in the world” and warning his own that they must be “prepared to suffer”. The latter phrase has become his motto over recent weeks and it is anything but sabre-rattling. His team appear to have come to Catalonia braced to weather a storm.

Yet, behind the scenes there has been an acknowledgment that Chelsea must gamble if they are to make the Champions League quarter-finals. Their approach in the second leg with the score at 1-1 is likely to be bolder than Conte’s rhetoric suggested. In the first leg he had asked Eden Hazard to fill in as a false No 9 and asked Willian and Pedro, a former Barça player, to scurry to the Belgian’s support. Chelsea had soaked up the visitors’ possession and prospered on the counterattack.

Anish Kapoor criticizes 'intolerant, divisive' NRA after video used sculpture

22:17
•
Anish Kapoor, the celebrated British artist, has blasted the National Rifle Association for its “nightmarish, intolerant, divisive vision” after the group used a clip of one of his works in a promotional video.

Kapoor said the use of footage of his Cloud Gate sculpture in Chicago’s Millenium Park by the NRA “perverts everything that Cloud Gate – and America – stands for”.

Known colloquially in Chicago as “the bean”, Cloud Gate is a three-storey high arcing, metallic-mirrored form that has been the visual centerpiece of the park, and a major tourist attraction, since its dedication in 2006. The NRA showed it for a brief, second-long cut in a provocative video released last August titled the Clinched Fist of Truth, which was widely criticised for directing violent language at media outlets like the New York Times, and generally, anyone perceived as a political opponent of the association.

André Gomes may feature against Chelsea despite Barcelona ‘hell’

22:15
•
Ernesto Valverde is considering including André Gomes against Chelsea despite the midfielder publicly admitting he is not enjoying playing football and is struggling with the pressure at the club.

The Barcelona manager described Gomes, 24, as “brave” for speaking out and the midfielder Sergio Busquets said the squad would help their team-mate after the former Valencia player gave an interview to Panenka magazine in which he described his “hell” at Barcelona. “Andre has lots of qualities; let’s see if tomorrow is the day that he shows that,” Valverde said.

“I don’t feel good on the pitch,” the Portuguese said in the interview, which was conducted at the end of February and published on Monday. “I am not enjoying what I am doing. The first six months were pretty good but then things changed. Maybe it’s not the right word to use but it has turnedinto a kind of hell because I have started to feel more pressure. With [some] pressure I feel fine but withthe pressure [I put] on myself I don’t. The feeling that I have during games is bad.

Brad Jones survives cut for Bert van Marwijk's Socceroos squad

22:15
•
Goalkeeper Brad Jones has returned from four years in the international wilderness as Bert van Marwijk finalised his first squad as Socceroos coach. Van Marwijk has picked Jones ahead of fellow goalkeeper Mitch Langerak in a 26-man squad for friendlies against Norway and Colombia later this month.

Stalwart Tim Cahill has been included despite limited game-time for Millwall while Czech Republic-based defender Aleksandar Å uÅ¡njar has also survived van Marwijk’s first cut. The newly-appointed Dutch manager dropped Langerak, striker Jamie Maclaren and Alex Gersbach from the initial list of 29 named last week.

The trimmed squad, announced on Wednesday, features four uncapped players – Susnjar, Andrew Nabbout, Dimitri Petratos and Daniel Vukovic. Petratos is among a quartet of A-League players in the squad, along with Josh Brillante, James Troisi and Josh Risdon.

Cautious CJ Stander keeps Ireland’s Six Nations champagne on ice

22:14
•
J Stander could be forgiven for mislaying the plot on Ireland’s history with the grand slam. In his excitement over being on the verge of the championship’s top prize he reckoned this kind of opportunity comes along once every 40 years. In 2009, when Ireland won their last – and second – clean sweep Stander was still in South Africa, not yet 19, and a distance removed from even a Currie Cup debut with the Bulls.

Last Saturday night, however, surrounded by team-mates and partners and watching the rest of the room wade into the post-match celebrations, the Munster No 8 was struggling to come to terms with it all.

“To win a championship with a game in hand is a great achievement and I will never take that away,” he says. “I’ve never had it – it’s my first senior win ever in my life. I felt inside I wanted to flip the table and dance on it! But I knew we had another game to go and it’s something that comes every 40 years so it’s something special. We need to make sure that we keep it inside.

Sevilla’s Ben Yedder sends Manchester United crashing out of Europe

22:10
•
This elimination of Manchester United from the Champions League was deserved. José Mourinho’s team barely raised a whimper against a Sevilla side who finally took their chances through the substitute Wissam Ben Yedder.

The best context to place this in is Vincenzo Montella’s team are fifth in La Liga with a goal difference of minus six and had won only two of their six Champions League group games.

Mourinho’s failure to guide his team into the quarter-finals is further compounded by how the maligned David Moyes did take United through to the last eight four years ago.

Ben Yedder had only just been introduced yet the space the Frenchman luxuriated in for the opener meant the forward could hardly fail to score from Pablo Sarabia’s pass. His second was as scruffy as United were slipshod as he beat Ashley Young to a header which was touched on to the bar by David de Gea, dropped down and after one bounce spun over the goalline.

Edin Dzeko sends Roma through against Shakhtar and into last eight

22:09
•
Roma are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2008 after beating Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 in their second-leg tie at the Stadio Olimpico thanks to a magnificent finish by Edin Dzeko, which sent them through on the away goal they scored in a 2-1 defeat in the first leg.

Roma celebrated only their second win in six meetings with the Ukrainian side and got revenge for a 6-2 aggregate defeat by them at the same stage of the competition in 2011, although they endured a nervy finish.

Having trailed 2-1 from the first leg, Roma looked bereft of ideas for much of the contest before Dzeko broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute following a tepid first half devoid of goalmouth action.

Shakhtar came close to extending their overall advantage when the Roma defender Alessandro Florenzi headed a floated free-kick into the box inches wide of his own far post.

NFL off-season hots up with Cousins set for Vikings as Brees sticks with Saints

22:07
•
The biggest question of the NFL off-season appears to be settled with ESPN reporting that Kirk Cousins plans to sign for the Minnesota Vikings on a three-year deal worth $84m later this week.

The 29-year-old Cousins has been one of the most productive quarterbacks in the league over the last few seasons and was courted by a number of teams when it became clear he would leave Washington. The shortlist was narrowed down to the Vikings and the New York Jets over the last few weeks with Minnesota, who reached the NFC Championship game last season, offering the best chance at a Super Bowl and the Jets with the salary cap space to offer Cousins more money.

Fishing for krill is an eco-disaster: we must protect the Antarctic

22:05
•
What’s small, pink, and can be seen from space? The answer depends on your perspective.

To the whales, seals and penguins of the Antarctic: it’s dinner. To you and me: it’s a small creature called krill, which forms the bedrock of the Antarctic food web. But unfortunately, and as a new report by Greenpeace lays bare, for an expanding multimillion dollar fishing industry: it’s an investment opportunity.

One of the quirks of life on our planet is that the biggest creatures to have ever lived, blue whales, depend on something no bigger than your little finger: krill. Gathering in their billions, these tiny crustaceans form vast clouds of pink in Antarctic waters which can stretch for miles and show up in satellite imagery.

Blue, humpback, fin and minke whales all consume krill – some up to two tonnes in a single day. Penguin colonies across the Antarctic are strewn with pink-stained snow because of the volume of krill they eat. Fur seals, crabeater seals, and many more animals rely on them. Even the things that don’t eat krill usually eat something that does: albatross, leopard seals and killer whales are all indirectly dependent on krill.

Banega outshines Fellaini and shows Mourinho what he’s missing

22:04
•
Sometimes you get what you deserve in sport. With an hour gone on an angsty night at Old Trafford, with Manchester United fumbling vaguely in front of the Sevilla defence like a man struggling in the wee hours for his door key, José Mourinho decided, what the hell, and brought on Paul Pogba for Marouane Fellaini.

Old Trafford roared itself out of its slumbers as Mourinho’s most compelling midfield presence made a belated entrance. And yet half an hour later Manchester United had exited the Champions League without having at any stage made any obvious attempts to stay in it.

They did so in limp fashion, outmanoeuvred by a wonderful midfield stylist in Éver Banega, who played United off their own pitch while barely seeming to break a sweat.
