Laura Dern's Admiral Amilyn Holdo was originally introduced as a "Resistance Officer", but we now know that that undersells her role slightly - Holdo is a new leader of the Resistance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
In the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, it's revealed that Holdo's rise comes as a result of the First Order's actions at the end of The Force Awakens.

She's designed to be divisive, too. Rather than attempt to introduce 'another Leia', Holdo will apparently butt heads with members of the Resistance - including Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron - from the off.
As Dern herself puts it: “You have to sort of figure out whose side you’re on or what your feelings are about her."

The article makes clear that Holdo isn't replacing Leia - but doesn't tell us how the movie will deal with her characte
 Holdo hasn't come from nowhere - she worked under and learned from Leia in the Resistance, and a new novel, 'Leia, Princess of Alderaan' reveals that both women were a part of the earlier Rebellion together. There's much more on Holdo (including quotes from Dern and Oscar Isaac) in EW's feature.
Aside from Leia's part in all this, there's still much we likely won't learn until The Last Jedi's release in December - including what that "something else" that Rey feels besides Light and Dark might be. r after the tragic death of actress Carrie Fisher.
