Vijay’s latest film Mersal has already earned over Rs 100 crore worldwide at the box office and is sprinting towards a mammoth total, with international markets also fuelling its upward graph. The film, which released on October 18 worldwide, has managed to do better than the two Hindi releases -- Ajay Devgn’s Golmaal Again and Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar -- in certain international markets.
After five days of its release, the Diwali release had made over Rs 16.49 crore across international markets such as North America (Rs 7.61 crore), Malaysia (Rs 3.57 crore), New Zealand (Rs 13.62 lakh), UK (Rs 3.11 crore) and Australia (Rs 2.07 crore). The film’s UAE collections are yet to come in.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh, quoting Rentrak, tweeted the figures on Monday. He also wrote, “Tamil film #Mersal is chasing a MASSIVE TOTAL in international markets, despite stiff opposition posed by the two Hindi releases... It won’t be erroneous to state that Tamil film #Mersal is collecting more than the two Hindi releases in some key international markets.”

Mersal has had a fantastic run since its release. As per reliable sources, the film has made Rs 51 crore worldwide on day 1. It is believed that the Vijay starrer, which has been directed by Atlee, raked in around Rs 34 crore from domestic market and Rs 17 crore plus from overseas market.
The film’s day 1 figures in Chennai city (which is among the biggest markets for Tamil films) the film picked up Rs 22.5 crore and just fell short of Rajinikanth’s Kabali record (Rs 23.5 crore), reported Forbes.
Made at an estimated budget of Rs 130 crore, Mersal is the most expensive film in Vijay’s career, surpassing his action-adventure flick Puli, which was made at a estimated budget of Rs 100 crore.
Since its release Mersal has been dragged into controversy. The Tamil Nadu state unit of BJP on Thursday objected to what it called “incorrect references” on the Goods and Services Act (GST) in Mersal. It demanded that the said scene be removed from the film. “Incorrect references have been made in Mersal about GST (Goods and Service Tax)... celebrities should desist from registering wrong information among people,” said BJP state unit president Tamilisai Sounderrajan.
