Holiday season at the movies showcases Oscar contenders

Hollywood is notorious for churning out films that offer few good roles for women. So in a typical year, naming five performers worthy of consideration for the best actress Oscar can be a real head-scratcher.
But this is not a typical year. The field of fine performances by female stars is so crowded that the question is which of them will make the cut. And moviegoers will have the chance to check out many of those displays of acting skill this holiday season and early next year.

In 'Three Billboards,' a timely portrait of outrage

Right now, the front-runners appear to be Frances McDormand as an avenging mom
in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (which was actually shot in North Carolina) and Sally Hawkins as a mute cleaning woman to whom something extraordinary happens in “The Shape of Water.”
But the contenders also include Kate Winslet in Woody Allen’s “Wonder Wheel,” Jessica Chastain in Aaron Sorkin’s “Molly’s Game” and — don’t ever count her out — Meryl Streep in Steven Spielberg’s “The Post.”
And those are just performances from films that haven’t opened in St. Louis yet. Also considered strong possibilities to score Oscar nods are Saoirse Ronan for “Lady Bird” and most recent winner Emma Stone (“La La Land”) for “Battle of the Sexes.”
